Grandma Bozarth's Raw Apple Cake

1 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/3 cup shortening
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon salt (optional)
2 cups apples, raw, peeled and diced

Directions: Cream together sugar, egg and shortening. Sift together flour, cinnamon, soda, nutmeg, cloves and salt. Add apples. Gradually add apple mixture to first mixture. Bake in greased, floured pan at 350°F for 45 minutes. Serve plain or with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes: Baking time varies according to how much moisture there is in the apples. Cake is done when it has an even glaze over the top.
