Favorite Cherry Cobbler

1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups tart cherries
1/2 cup water, or juice from cherries

Directions: Cream butter and 1/2 cup sugar. Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Beat until smooth, and pour into a greased 8 inch square baking dish. Mix 1/2 cup sugar, cherries and water. Bring this mixture to a boil and pour over the batter. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 40 minutes. The cherries will bake through the batter and settle to the bottom.

Notes: I recently requested this recipe from my neighbor after she brought it to a potluck dinner. Of all the cobblers, this is the best.
